Workplace awareness of mental health, particularly regarding suicide, is crucial as mental health issues are often more prevalent than we think and often go unnoticed.
In this article by Dr Jo Burrell in HR Zone Magazine, to raise awareness of World Suicide Prevention Day, she shares alarming statistics that in a company of 1,000 employees, one person may die by suicide every ten years, with many more attempting it.
In fact one UK survey shows 1 in 4 workers have struggled with suicidal thoughts, and 15% have experienced a colleague attempting or dying by suicide. Younger employees are particularly vulnerable yet less likely to seek help.
Jo highlights how recognising subtle behavioral changes and addressing the topic openly, such as asking directly about suicidal thoughts, can be life-saving, emphasising that employers must foster an environment where mental health is prioritised, and open conversations are encouraged to help prevent tragedies.
