What is Resilience Coaching? (And, How Can it Help Me?)

Updated: Sep 16, 2022

Here at Ultimate Resilience, much of our time is spent delivering resilience training within a group context. Through these workshops we help people develop their understanding of stress and learn about new ways of building resilience skills. Published research and our own workshop outcome data have shown that this type of intervention is effective in improving both wellbeing and resilience.

But what do you do if you don’t have the time for a full day’s workshop? If you don’t feel comfortable in a group setting? Or when you have a specific problem that you want to address in more detail?

This is where one-to-one resilience coaching comes in.

How can resilience coaching help me?

Whether you are going through change at home or at work, managing the impact of health problems in your day-to-day life or dealing with a difficult relationship, resilience coaching can be a really useful tool. In fact, it’s not only something you can use to tackle a whole range of troubling issues, but something that can improve your overall wellbeing – now and in the future!

The key benefits of resilience coaching over workshops are linked to the expert targeted support you receive on an individual basis. With our help and support you will narrow down the issues that need addressing, explore coping skills and build a resilience strategy to deal with those issues. This has the ultimate aim of helping you to develop and maintain a more confident, optimistic and resilient outlook, making you better equipped to manage and overcome both current and future challenges.

So, what might I expect from a resilience coaching session?

Firstly, we’ll help you to clearly define your issues and aims. We’ll look at what resilience skills you’re using already and which ones you might usefully add to your tool kit. You’ll get a chance to practise and reflect on your use of these new skills, by feeding back on how applying them has helped. Plus, we’ll explore and trouble-shoot any blocks or set-backs you may have experienced during this process.

Resilience is not just about managing stress and challenges but about being able to learn from those experiences, bounce back and build new skills through doing so. Reflection is essential in the resilience coaching process as this builds resilience by enhancing self-awareness and change recognition. In turn, this increases your motivation to keep applying new skills.

Reflection also helps to build self-efficacy. Learning that you can take charge of difficult experiences, and seeing the benefit of doing so, not only builds resilience in the current situation, but also confidence to deal with future challenges.

Because this is a targeted and focused method it is also typically a brief approach: we would usually meet with clients for up to 5 sessions at a frequency of your choice (weekly, fortnightly or monthly). It’s important that resilience coaching addresses your particular issues in a flexible way that fits around your other commitments.

What sort of results can I expect?

Here’s what some of our clients have said about the resilience coaching they received:

“I found all the sessions incredibly helpful as they allowed me to 1) explore my feelings and frustrations about a difficult situation at work in a safe and professionally supportive environment, and 2) identify, understand and cope with the physical symptoms of stress and anxiety which were happening to me at the time”.

“Very helpful. Helped me to resolve an issue that I had with another member of staff. I also generally feel a lot happier and positive on a day to day basis, even my daughter noticed a difference!”

“I don’t think it’s exaggerating to say (the sessions) gave me the strength to keep working throughout a very difficult period”.

“I found the coaching extremely helpful. It was a useful exploration of resilience and how it manifests itself differently in different people. I was particularly pleased that we were able to look at practical steps to either develop resilience techniques I already apply, or to introduce techniques to given situations”.

“It was helpful to go through real life problems and think objectively about why I experience things the way I do. I was really impressed with how much was covered in the short time available”.

“It helped having someone professional to discuss matters that I felt I wasn’t dealing with. I found the sessions positive and they improved my positivity and confidence”.[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section]
